Knock Knock

Dear Friends,
Do you remember when those corny Knock-Knock jokes were all the rage?
Knock Knock
Who’s there?
Goat!
Goat who?
Go-to the door and see who’s there.

Knock Knock
Who’s there?
Boo?
Boo who?
Quit crying and answer the door!

Moving from the ridiculous to the sublime, how would you complete this one?

Knock Knock
Who’s there?
Jesus
Jesus who?
???

Just who is Jesus anyway? Is he someone we read about, sing about, and occasionally worship? Or is he much more? Is he someone who shapes our worldview, gives us a framework to build our lives upon, and secures our eternity?

Days before he went to the cross, Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do people say I am?”

“Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say you are one of the other ancient prophets risen from the dead.”

Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?”

Peter replied, “You are the Messiah sent from God!” Luke 9:18b-25 (NLT)

In the book of Mark we learn that Jesus told his disciples not to tell anyone about him. Then he told them how he would suffer many things, be killed, and the third day rise again.

As he talked about this openly with his disciples, Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things.  Jesus turned around and looked at his disciples, then reprimanded Peter. “Get away from me, Satan!” he said. “You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.” Mark 8:32-33

Peter knew the correct answer when Jesus asked, “Who do you say I am?” But at this point he didn’t really understand Jesus role as Lord and Savior. When we answer Jesus’ question, “Who do you say I am?” are we, like Peter, seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.

Who is Jesus? Each day Bonnie and I pray that “ … our wills may be so knit together in his will and our spirits with his Spirit that we may grow in love and peace with him and one another all the days of our lives.” We keep asking to know him more.

“Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. Matthew 7:7-8

Which brings us to one last “Knock Knock.”

“Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.” Revelation 3:20
