The population of the United States is approaching 332 million people. By the end of the day November 3rd, approximately half of them will have voted in the presidential election. When the results are announced, 75 million or so may be elated, while another 70 million or more may feel deflated. Those on the winning side may shout Halellujah, for now; those on the losing side may wonder why God ignored their prayers.
O Lord, how long will you forget me? Forever? How long will you look the other way?
Psalm 13:1 (NLT)
In this election, many voters have probably followed the rule: Given two bad options, choose the one that will do the least damage. Undoubtably, some of your brothers and sisters in Christ will choose to pray for a different outcome than you. One thing is certain: our feelings about each man notwithstanding, one of them has been appointed by God to serve as president.
Let every person be loyally subject to the governing (civil) authorities. For there is no authority except from God [by His permission, His sanction], and those that exist do so by God’s appointment. Romans 13:1 (Amplified Bible, Classic Edition)
When King Solomon was dedicating the temple to God, he prayed, and God offered words that speak to the situation in which we find ourselves today:
“When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:13-14 (NIV)
Our land needs healing. Be sure to vote. Even more important, be sure to pray that whoever is elected to lead us will seek God’s face and will help our nation turn from its wicked ways.
Closing thoughts for Christians who may end up feeling deflated:
Those who know your name trust in you,
for you, O Lord, do not abandon those who search for you. Psalm 9:10 (NLT)
For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime! Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning. Psalm 30:5
