My latest misadventure is being part of the church choir at Laguna Country Methodist Church in Laguna Hills, California. I can’t claim to have a good voice, but when Howard, one of the members of the choir asked me to join the choir — “We need more men, he explained” — I decided to give it a shot.
The first two weeks, the music that Richard, the choir director, had chosen was easy to sing. But choir practice this week was discouraging. Sitting next to David, a man who uses his voice like a fine instrument, I seemed to be off-key more than on it.
After the practice, I approached the choir director and told him I felt a bit lost. I am in the middle of several basses, and I am at best a baritone. Smiling broadly, he said, “Don’t worry about hitting the low notes. Just harmonize.”
The words from the Passion Translation remind us that anytime we raise our voice to praise the Lord, we are in harmony with nature.
Lightning, hail, snow, clouds, and the stormy winds that fulfill his word—bring your melody, O mountains and hills; trees of the forest and field, harmonize your praise! Psalm 148:8-9 (TPT)
When I returned home and told Bonnie about what Richard had said, she exclaimed, “Isn’t that just like life? Everything is better when we can harmonize with those around us.”
Tomorrow, November 13th is World Kindness Day. With all the turmoil in this world, wouldn’t it be great to set aside one day to be kind to those around you? Make it a point to praise the Lord as you show his face to all you meet.
Blessings,
If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Romans 12:18
